Quality of camping good in the UK.

Postby rexgrant on Thu Oct 22, 2009 7:14 pm

Hi all
This year Val and I have had to return 7 Items due to bad quality control, all these goods were Defective on arrival or broke when first used,
We have returned two in the last two days Item one :- a £500 bedroom annex for a Camplet trailer tent This items leaked in numerous places were cotton canvas was sown onto Coated polyester canvas, unless the seams are stitched first class and possibly taped, if not, any tension on these seams will open the stitching above the amount the swelling of cotton canvas can seal. camperlands have accepted responsibility and are refunding,
Item 2:- The Thule Ranger fold away top box £140 this item as been fitted with Zip sliders with weak connection to the pullers so The Zip pulls will brake out when pulled under pressure , they are going to replace it with another .this we are not happy with but within the law we will have to accept,if it brakes out again we will be entitled to a refund after having to pack this item twice and send it back.
We are now living in a society of returns and we are accepting it. It is cheaper for manufacturers to get products assembled in third world countries with no QA management system or Quality Control, for less than half the price it would cost in Europe to assemble or produce. And replace the goods when they are sent to us defective. Even if these dishonorable companies pay the carriage and some may even agree to collect it and replace,It is still an inconvenience the customer should not have to put up with.
I suspect most of us as bought Items within the last 12 months, have you had this problem,as most of my friends and family have.
This is the reason I always go for quality, and that usually means expensive, but in the long run I have found it pays off.New items I have never herd complaints about. Thetford toilets, DeWaard tents, Cabanon tents, Karston tents, Vanmaster caravans, most European caravans, and motor homes.
Camping spares from the Tent and awning clinic. 12volt goods from the 12volt shop. If these companies can supply good quality camping gear Why do we buy from the rest I**l
Regards
Rex. gr*y gr*y gr*y spw

I agree Rex but us English don't complain often enough so therefore no pressure on the manufacturers. I believe that if I purchase an item then it should be fit for the purpose it was bought for and I refuse to accept shoddy goods whatever the price.

We bought a Compass caravan about 5 years ago, following the theft of our beloved Senator 5000 from a club site.
The new one is very nice and we are very pleased with it. However they still havnt replaced the ceiling blinds, front and back, which have small holes in them and should have been replaced under the gaurantee. The parts have been ordered twice now and then you just hear nothing from the caravan sales place.
Theres no chance of them being done now so we will have to pay for them ourselves along with the front left blind which has been wonkey from the start.
Sadly, as customers, we dont seem to have any right of complaint as there is always `very small` print to allow them to weedle out of their obligation.
Not sure what the answer is. These companies seem to go out of their way to make life as difficult as possible.

Thank you Rex. I will be persuing this one.
I love my caravan but there are just these niggling things, which should have been put right but wernt. I will give them a call tomorrow.
Unfortunately it will mean getting the caravan out of strorage but thats a small price to pay, all things considered.
Last time it was serviced they said they would order the parts, but we heard nothing. They should be able to get an engineer to me rather than me go to them. I hope I dont have to go to them as its in Hull. Nice though Hull is, its a long way from North West Kent. lol

ps. thanks again.
