Pool bridge campsite Hornerwood exmoor

Postby rexgrant on Thu Apr 16, 2009 10:57 am

Hi
This is the reason I bought my little pyramid tent,my folding camper is too big to take to Pool Bridge.
http://www.caravancampingsites.co.uk/so ... bridge.htm
This campsite is the ultimate back to nature site with showers/WC/and washing up facilities.the best of both worlds.
There is no electric on the site too far away from civiliseation to get it but the showers etc are heated with gas but you do have to take your own light at night.
The site is situated about 2 1/2 miles SSW of the Town of Porlock If you use Google Maps UK and on the map page find Porlock between Minehead & Lynmouth click the + & - sign down to notch 4 and on the road A39 you will see Porlock hill marked, move 3" south(down) to the Exmoor national park sign and go up a magnification 1 notch were the road bends into a big nose go up to max magnification and switch to Satellite and there at the end of the nose you will see the site. Good fun finding it both on here and in real life
There is a trout steam that runs the full length of the site were you can pitch and light your fire, lots of campers go back to basics here and cook over an open fire but you will require a pitch to the left of the track on the river side to have a fire unless it is in a proper fire box off the ground. The walks here are really wonderful as you can see on the google map the woodland is deciduous.
Please do not try to take a motorhome or caravan to the site, as well as not been accepted you may get stuck trying to get there.
This site as now got well known with locals going back to nature so at weekends and in the school holidays can get very busy and the washrooms can get a little busy.

You can not book just arrive and find a pitch and the owner will find you.if you arrive late and leave early there is or was a trust box to leave your fees.

I would recommend that you arrive Monday to find the better pitches after the weekend campers have gone home,if you are coming from a distance.
This site is the best of both worlds, and Horner wood is a twitches paradise .
Rex.
PS There are quite a few sites within 10 miles of pool bridge two in Doone Vally near lynmouth you can have a fire ,Westermill at Exford should the site be overcrowded in the school holidays.

Camping is a special way of life, with a special kind of person who can make friends, even with other campers we have never met.

My friends, may the wind be always at your back.

Hi all
Val and I had a run out over Exmoor today. We called in Pool Bridge and three tents were braving the cold, the site is still a bit wet in places.I recommend you give it a another month more to dry out, still too early for the breeding Merlin on the moor top and the pied flycatchers in the provided nest boxes,
Rex.
