Extracting Delta Pegs

Postby Former Scout on Fri Jul 31, 2009 10:52 pm

Even those of us who strongly recommend these pegs are aware that they can be a beggar to pull out of the ground.

This week, in one of my most disorganised camps ever, I realised that I had forgotten my standard peg extractor. It's better than nothing but even with that it can be difficult to get the Deltas out of the ground. However, necessity being the mother of invention and all that, I used the handle end of my Decathlon Hiking Mallet. It was brilliant and the Deltas came out easily.

It's hard to say why it works so well. I suspect that it has something to do with the bit coming into contact with the peg being flat and not curved like the regular peg-extractors. But each time those little yellow nylon things came out at first attempt and with little effort.

Hi FS
Two years ago I drilled a hole through all my pegs, and have used them ever since and my wire extractor fits at just the right angle to pull them out. As you know get them right and they just slide out of any type of ground
You can just see the hole I drilled in this photo,if you click on enlarge.
But I will certainly get one of those mallets as well
Thanks for the tip.
Rex

Camping is a special way of life, with a special kind of person who can make friends, even with other campers we have never met.

My friends, may the wind be always at your back.

Yes, I remember Rex espousing this idea "in another place" some time ago, but never got round to getting the drill out.
