Cool boxes for camping

Postby rexgrant on Tue May 19, 2009 1:22 pm

Hi all
Well technology as not left the camper too far behind but keeping up with it is not easy
But I have spent some time checking out new cool boxes and updated ones.
Please note I can not recommend three of these as I have not used them.
The Basic cool box. Myself I still use my Igloo I have had for six or seven years and for weekend camping it is fine but should I require a basic cool box to last me for longer I would be tempted to go for this new one to the UK. This link will take you to the site http://www.icey-tek.co.uk/catalogue.asp Expensive yes, Good :?: :?:

The Thermoelectric or TEC cool box this is the only TEC one with any form of control and that is only a reduced power cut ,all other 12volt TEC cool boxes work flat out all the time they are on. but this one is in my opinion the best of the bunch it is very well insulated and will cool to 30deg C below the ambient temperature ,so will keep your food safe in very hot conditions ,and will reduce power at night to stop the unit freezing
http://www.comparestoreprices.co.uk/cam ... oolbox.asp Expensive Yes, Good yes I think so.
I read the review on this box,and the work I have done with peltiers system TECs. What he says does not compute. The results he got says to me the box had a fault in supply and was cutting down too soon this would give the result he quoted,so personally I would give the makers claims more credence that the reviewer on this one.

Three way Coolers 12volt DC / LPG / 240VAC absorption cooling and very quite I have used this Waeco Combcool 40 for a few years now and in my opinion it is the best it also one of the very few that cools to 25deg. below the ambient temperature.and is adjustable but as not got temperature control
http://www.mobilegas.co.uk/mobilecoolbo ... /index.htm yes I can recommend this cool box and is very good value.

The compressor cool box. These cool boxes operate from 12 + 24 volt DC
So will require a mains transformer to run from an EHU .
These cool boxes work like your domestic fridge at home and the required temperature can be set

Expensive Very Good the best, if you always use an EHU or have a wheeled unit with good battery storage and at least 100Watt solar panel
fitted then 4 or five days on DC is possible.
Regards
Rex.
PS changed the cooling spec. on the waeco 40 three way.since my post they have changed the spec from 30 to 25 below ambient
Camping is a special way of life, with a special kind of person who can make friends, even with other campers we have never met.

My friends, may the wind be always at your back.
